Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863.

South Side in Focus originated from an interest in broadening our understanding of the community we live in, beyond the media portrayal emphasizing violence and poverty. We use photo-narratives to initiate an open, personal, and holistic dialogue about life in South Side communities.
Over the past few months, we asked members of I Grow Chicago,Blackstone Bicycle Works, Creativity in Motion, Urban Juncture Foundation, and the Artful Living Program to take photos of what makes them feel well or unwell in their communities. We then used these photos to collect oral histories about their lives and communities. “Heal Our City” is the debut of these unique stories.

Fantasie Negre III
Fantasie Negre III, the annual fundraiser of the Chicago Music Association, is a celebration of musical excellence. We are honored to present this year’s featured artists, acclaimed concert violinist Rachel Barton Pine and the brilliant vocal artistry of Rodrick Dixon and Alfreda Burke. Pine, Dixon and Burke, all Chicagoans, have recorded and performed with major ochestras and opera companies throughout the United States as will as internationally. Pine’s Violin Concertos by Black Composers of the 18th and 19th Centuries, shed light on four gifted musicians of African descent that made significant contributions to Western classical music, and was nominated for a National Public Radio Heritage Award. In addition to their numerous operatic offerings, Dixon and Burke have been heralded for their performances in Hallelujah Broadway, Too Hot to Handel, and Songs of a Dream. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see all three of these gifted musicians on the same stage!

The Moving Images, Making Cities Film Series is a cinematic companion to Place Lab’s Ethical Redevelopment Public Convenings + Salon Series. Ethical Redevelopment makes the case for mindful city-building. By utilizing cross-city networks and cross-sector innovation, Ethical Redevelopment works to shift the value system from conventional, profit-driven development practices to conscientious interventions in the urban context.
The filmmakers call it “Chicago’s most hotly contested 70 acres of land.” With its prime central location, Cabrini Green was hailed as a public housing triumph and demonized as an urban disaster. Beginning in 1995, it was demolished, bit and bit, then repackaged as a “mixed income”development, where, unsurprisingly, the former, largely black residents have been marginalized or driven away. Ronit Bezalel and Judy Hoffman, who first covered the subject in their celebrated 1999 short Voices of Cabrini, spent 15 years on this eye-opening follow-up, which uses personal stories, expert commentary, and informative history to celebrate the spirit of a unique community and to mourn its betrayal and destruction.
A partnership between Place Lab and Black Cinema House this screening and conversation with Ronit Bezalel about her award-winning film on the demolition and repackaging of Cabrini Green kicks off a year-long film series exploring the complexities of neighborhood transformation and revealing the poetics of place.
